Feeling stuck, frustrated, or like you are no longer winning in the areas of life that matter most?

In this episode of the Running Routes Podcast, Allen DeGraffenreid introduces the ROUTES Method, a practical life framework for high achievers who want to get out of a rut, build better habits, and create meaningful progress without trying to force themselves into a one-size-fits-all system.

Many people try to fix their lives by setting bigger goals, working harder, or copying someone else’s formula. But real progress starts with understanding where you are now. Are your current patterns helping you win, or are you still using an outdated playbook that no longer fits your life?

Allen breaks down the six areas of the ROUTES Method:

  • Relationships
  • Occupation
  • Upkeep, including physical and mental health
  • Training and personal development
  • Enterprise, including side income, business, and contribution
  • Spirit and spiritual connection

Through the ROUTES Index, habit-building tools like Win the Week, community, coaching, and practical reflection, this episode helps you identify where you are, what needs attention, and how to create a personalized route toward a better life

In this episode, you will learn:

  • Why high achievers can feel stuck even when they have a history of winning.
  • How an outdated playbook can keep you from moving forward.
  • Why you should assess your current situation before setting goals.
  • How the ROUTES Method helps you evaluate relationships, career, health, personal growth, finances, and spiritual life.
  • Why better habits create better patterns over time.
  • How to replace habits that are not helping you with practical, healthier alternatives.
  • Why personal growth should be personalized to your strengths, current circumstances, and needs.
  • How the ROUTES Index can help establish a baseline for your next chapter.
  • How to begin building a life system that helps you start winning again.

Your life does not need another generic playbook. It needs a route that fits where you are, where you want to go, and what you need to change first.

0:00 [SPEAKER_00]: Hey, hey, hey, how are you doing today? [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Running Rounds podcast with Alan DeGrafton Read. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm your host, Alan DeGrafton Read. [SPEAKER_00]: Today we're going to talk about is how to stop looking at the scoreboard after playing a game of football and seeing runs bad at end. [SPEAKER_00]: How so many of us as overachievers tend to score ourselves by the wrong scoreboard and we're keeping track of the wrong things. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to talk about that here on the episode today. [SPEAKER_00]: But before we get into that, I wanted to talk a little bit to our overachievers [SPEAKER_00]: About why do we think we're doing that with the looking at the scoreboard? [SPEAKER_00]: What is the mistake that we think we're making? [SPEAKER_00]: How can we make those corrections before getting in that though? [SPEAKER_00]: I want to talk about three things we all might need to consider. [SPEAKER_00]: Number one, is the playbook I'm using to run my life strong enough?

0:43 [SPEAKER_00]: Is it the right playbook that fits for me? [SPEAKER_00]: Or, number two, is my playbook maybe outdated? [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'm using old planning for maybe back when I was younger? [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe in a little bit better shape? [SPEAKER_00]: perhaps, or number three, do I not have a plate book at all? [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just shooting from the hip, going by, by the seat of my pants, flying through this life, not making any good decisions based on anything, but just what happens today? [SPEAKER_00]: Carpadeum, live for today, for whatever happens tomorrow, blobby, blob, blob, blob, blob. [SPEAKER_00]: Is that what we're at or not? [SPEAKER_00]: So today we're going to talk about winning versus losing. [SPEAKER_00]: So before that, I want to tell a story, and then I want you to think about this story, and then we'll get into me actually telling you about my framework, the way I go about making corrections, getting people to the next level in their lives.

1:30 [SPEAKER_00]: So when we talk about the framework here in a minute, but I want to tell a story first. [SPEAKER_00]: And this story is about winning, about winning. [SPEAKER_00]: I am a winner. [SPEAKER_00]: I win at everything, and I like to let people know that whenever they're going against me, you are going to lose. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't care if I'm coaching eighth grade football. [SPEAKER_00]: The other team is going to lose because I am a winner. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure if everyone out there feels that way, but I feel that way about myself. [SPEAKER_00]: I am going to win. [SPEAKER_00]: So, years ago, I was working at Grand Canyon University. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I've told GCU storage before. [SPEAKER_00]: And I have this guy sat next to me named Kramer and Kramer was a fun guy, good guy, real big Buckeye's fan, which was weird because of the Navizona.

2:13 [SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, Kramer and Vic were the two guys I ran with there and there was another lady that was having a party, like a party where you just play like a game day party or whatever you call it, like a party, a game party, I guess you'd call it, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So he's having this party and Crayman Vick coming, say, hey, Alan, you should really come to this party. [SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a great time. [SPEAKER_00]: You're going to have a good time. [SPEAKER_00]: You can bring your wife. [SPEAKER_00]: And I said, what kind of game? [SPEAKER_00]: What kind of party is it? [SPEAKER_00]: And he said, well, it's like a game. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to play a bunch of games. [SPEAKER_00]: I said, oh, it's best if you don't invite me to things like that. [SPEAKER_00]: And he says, well, why shouldn't we invite you? [SPEAKER_00]: I said, because I'm going to win every single game. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's no mercy. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't take breaks.

2:53 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't take it easy on people. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to win every single game. [SPEAKER_00]: If I beat my kids in games, I'm going to be two in games. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, are you just kidding? [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, no, no, I'm serious. [SPEAKER_00]: If I come to this party, I will win every single game at some point time. [SPEAKER_00]: Some man, usable, trying to get mad and want to fight me, or a woman will throw a fit and they'll just storm off. [SPEAKER_00]: So if you want to have a good time, you might not want to invite me. [SPEAKER_00]: They're like, no, no, no, no. [SPEAKER_00]: No, man, it's just gonna be a great time coming out anyway. [SPEAKER_00]: I said, you have been warned. [SPEAKER_00]: And no, so I go to a game date, and I'm a game night, and they have to know to pull out apples to apples. [SPEAKER_00]: King, can I say I annihilate these people in apples at apples?

3:35 [SPEAKER_00]: No one, one, eight, I think maybe four or five, like the overall game had to win six or seven to win the game, and I won six or seven before anybody else could win. [SPEAKER_00]: Most people didn't win seven all night, but I won six or seven probably, [SPEAKER_00]: probably five or six different games. [SPEAKER_00]: And I won every single one. [SPEAKER_00]: It got to the point, one lady thought she was, she thought I got seven. [SPEAKER_00]: As I said, oh, Alan won a while ago. [SPEAKER_00]: It was really bad. [SPEAKER_00]: And I beat him and I beat him bad. [SPEAKER_00]: And then they went to another game. [SPEAKER_00]: And I beat him in the camera of the next game. [SPEAKER_00]: I beat him in that game. [SPEAKER_00]: And the next game was a team game. [SPEAKER_00]: I still want to be in my team. [SPEAKER_00]: Lady says, I ought to be in your team because I want to win. [SPEAKER_00]: and I said join my team then lady and we just proceeded to whip up on the whole room all night long.

4:17 [SPEAKER_00]: It got really, really bad and then one guy just stopped talking all together because he couldn't believe. [SPEAKER_00]: I was winning all the time and then another guy, it was wife, another lady was like, I don't want to do this anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: So the games kind of ended and we kind of had a little bit of hangout a little bit and I was first personally let's just say and there's no telling them what they said after I left. [SPEAKER_00]: but that's winning, that's what I do, I win. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, so here's the story. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm living in West Virginia, I owned at this point in time, a FedEx business had six routes to land every, [SPEAKER_00]: Day, six days a week, in central like Clarksburg, based out of Clarksburg, so I walk in the office one day and there's a bunch of the guys in there that actually work for FedEx. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't a business, I'm like, I'm outside, but I don't work for FedEx, I can work for myself.

5:02 [SPEAKER_00]: These guys work for FedEx and they're sitting there talking about their bowling balls and their bowling shoes and they got the wrist thing and all this different stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: They're talking how great they are at bowling. [SPEAKER_00]: I immediately walk in the door and say, I will walk every single one of y'all in bowling. [SPEAKER_00]: If I show up, I'm going to win, just know that. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, what kind of ball do you have? [SPEAKER_00]: I said, whatever balls on the rack over there that weighs whatever weight I wanted to weigh. [SPEAKER_00]: They said you're gonna get a ball from the alley. [SPEAKER_00]: I said correct. [SPEAKER_00]: What kind of shoes you're gonna wear? [SPEAKER_00]: The ones they rent to me, those are the ones I'm gonna wear. [SPEAKER_00]: You gotta risk, I don't got no risk, I don't need a risk bracelet with y'all. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to walk y'all in bowling. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, come on out, come on out, come on out. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll come out.

5:42 [SPEAKER_00]: I'll come out. [SPEAKER_00]: Then they had to mistake them at stake at saying, bring your wife. [SPEAKER_00]: I said, that's a bad idea. [SPEAKER_00]: If I bring my wife, there's no way I'm losing it from my wife. [SPEAKER_00]: She might think I'm a loser if I lose it from her. [SPEAKER_00]: That ain't gonna happen. [SPEAKER_00]: So the last thing you want me to do is bring my wife, they said, we'll bring your wife, because they think they're gonna win. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, that's a bad idea. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll bring my wife. [SPEAKER_00]: So me and my life so we're we're not quite late, but we're borderline all extremely on time. [SPEAKER_00]: We get there. [SPEAKER_00]: And these guys have all got the fancy balls out on us to stop doing all this fancy thing. [SPEAKER_00]: And I walk in and I said, how much your ball way? [SPEAKER_00]: And they say whatever way. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know a bowling ball way to it all. [SPEAKER_00]: So [SPEAKER_00]: I go over to the rack and I bring like two or three balls back and I'm slinging them down through there and the one I bowl it really super hard just to make it make a lot of noise and then the next one I kind of bowl down through there and the third time I bowl down there that's the strike I said I'll use that ball.

6:34 [SPEAKER_00]: That ball seems to be a good one. [SPEAKER_00]: So the ball we start the game and we're going, you know, frame one, frame two, frame three. [SPEAKER_00]: I hit a strike and frame three and like, oh, here we go, here we go, frame four, frame five, frame six. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not, I'm in like last place. [SPEAKER_00]: A five people I'm in last place. [SPEAKER_00]: At frame five, I'm losing. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not, I don't know how bad it is. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't really pick, keep score. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to keep score whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm down, five, we're frame five, then frame six comes and goes, and they just start talking trash. [SPEAKER_00]: Like you're nothing, you're nothing. [SPEAKER_00]: We're destroying you. [SPEAKER_00]: We're destroying you. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, the 10 frames of all the match. [SPEAKER_00]: 10 frames, 10 frames of my friend, there's 10 frames. [SPEAKER_00]: So we get the like frame eight, and our bowl is strike. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just only like my second strike, and I'm like, y'all gonna get nervous.

7:18 [SPEAKER_00]: They're like, man, we're destroying. [SPEAKER_00]: There's no way you're going to win this. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, okay, I got what? [SPEAKER_00]: Four or five more shots. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know about this. [SPEAKER_00]: So I get to number nine and I bowl and I hit like nine of them to fall. [SPEAKER_00]: But now all of them don't fall. [SPEAKER_00]: And then I miss the spare. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's called a spare. [SPEAKER_00]: I miss the spare. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, oh, this guy can't win. [SPEAKER_00]: This guy can't win. [SPEAKER_00]: And one of the guys is like one of those entrance score type dudes and he says, [SPEAKER_00]: He could still win. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a pot chance he could win, but it's pretty slim. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, don't need to be fat, baby. [SPEAKER_00]: It's slim. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm about to win this thing, just know that. [SPEAKER_00]: So I get up and I roll, strike. [SPEAKER_00]: It strikes, I say. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm on the landing thing, whatever you call it.

7:59 [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm yelling like T.O. [SPEAKER_00]: Who can make a play? [SPEAKER_00]: I can. [SPEAKER_00]: And everybody in the bowling, I was looking because I'm a nutball, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sober. [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't had to drink all night. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not drinking for whatever reason at that point time, trying to change my life for whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't drink at all right and I who gonna make a play so I get the ball back Strike who gonna make a play and these boys are starting to sweat they like [SPEAKER_00]: My gosh, he really about do that and the one guy looks at me says this is the slim opportunity. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought he would if he hits this strike he wins And I said I said about to my wife, Darjo. [SPEAKER_00]: Hey, baby. [SPEAKER_00]: What do we do? [SPEAKER_00]: She said we win, baby We win. [SPEAKER_00]: She's not really allowed like me.

8:39 [SPEAKER_00]: She quietly says it, you know, because she's all pretty and controlled you know how they are So see and I and then she Boom strike the pins go everywhere. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a strike and I'm down [SPEAKER_00]: Who can make a play I can I can and these guys are just destroyed half of them go outside to get a smoke in there Just oh my god, I can't please guy be me and I told y'all from the beginning all I do is win Win is what I do and winning what is what it's about there's winners in this world and there's losing in world I am a winner. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what I do [SPEAKER_00]: They said to know that before they asked me to come out there and whipped them boys out there was all said and done.

9:20 [SPEAKER_00]: Winning, baby, that's what we're here to talk about today. [SPEAKER_00]: Winning, let's get to go over and talk about today, okay? [SPEAKER_00]: So, in life, there are winners and there are losers. [SPEAKER_00]: There are people in this world that are winners and we all know the winners. [SPEAKER_00]: They win and everything, everything they touch turns the gold, they are winners. [SPEAKER_00]: And we all know losers. [SPEAKER_00]: It just seems like E or nothing in their life goes right. [SPEAKER_00]: They're losers, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Some people are self-proclaimed losers, where they've decided at some point in the life for some reason I don't know why that they're losers. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, we also know that just because a person is losing, it doesn't make them a loser, and just because a person is winning, it doesn't make them a winner.

10:00 [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of people in this world that think they're winners, but they're losers, they win every once in a while, and they're like, I'm a winner. [SPEAKER_00]: but really they're losers and you can tell by their character and the way they are that guy's really a loser but boy looks like he's winning right now. [SPEAKER_00]: That just is what that is. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm here to talk to people that are winners, they've always been winners, but for some reason in their life right now, it feels like things are just off. [SPEAKER_00]: And they can't figure out why are things off? [SPEAKER_00]: Why am I not winning like I'm used to when we were younger, we always won. [SPEAKER_00]: And it seemed like everything came to us so easily. [SPEAKER_00]: So being in the middle of losing or feeling like a loser is kind of, it's really foreign us. [SPEAKER_00]: We're like, we can't figure out exactly what this is.

10:40 [SPEAKER_00]: This is like there's something on us that's making us lose, but we can't quite figure out what it is. [SPEAKER_00]: That's who we're talking to today. [SPEAKER_00]: People that are winners or want to be winners, but currently feel like they are losing, but they don't want to become losers. [SPEAKER_00]: And if your winner is very tough to become a loser, it takes years and years of losing to become a loser. [SPEAKER_00]: because you have to change your mentality, your mindset, all those things have to change. [SPEAKER_00]: If we can snap your mindset back to where it needs to be, get you thinking like the winner you are, you'll be just fine, we'll get you where you wanna be. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, so the next thing we'll talk about is I'm gonna go into my framework. [SPEAKER_00]: My framework is routes, R-O-U-T-E-S.

11:21 [SPEAKER_00]: I played Y-Receivers, many of you know at Ohio State as well as throughout the NFL, CFL and World League. [SPEAKER_00]: So I bounce around to play football, [SPEAKER_00]: Play wide receiver, so I like to talk about routes. [SPEAKER_00]: R-O-U-T-E-S. Before I get into it, I want to explain kind of the overview of what it is I'm talking about. [SPEAKER_00]: So in football, when the quarterback snapped up the ball, snapped to the quarterback, the receivers tied in, running backs, can go out for routes, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So there's a guy running a hook, there's a guy running a post, there's guy running a go route, they're running these routes, and all those routes together form a pattern. [SPEAKER_00]: Right? [SPEAKER_00]: So the quarterback reads the defense versus the pattern that's being run, and that lets him know where to throw the ball.

12:06 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: So a bunch of routes make up a pattern like our lives have a pattern to them, where sometimes we're in a pattern of losing. [SPEAKER_00]: We're in a pattern of doing things that are frustrating. [SPEAKER_00]: We're in a pattern of doing the wrong things. [SPEAKER_00]: and we get comfortable, sometimes in them, and they seem easy, and the next thing you know, we are in the middle of loser dumb, right? [SPEAKER_00]: We don't want to be in loser dumb, we gotta get out of loser dumb. [SPEAKER_00]: Because right now, we're running the wrong routes. [SPEAKER_00]: The quarterback's trying to throw us to ball, but we're not open, because we ran the wrong routes. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so now let's go through routes. [SPEAKER_00]: R-O-U-T-E-S, the R-S for relationships, and we always think about the relation with our significant other, maybe have a boyfriend, girlfriend, [SPEAKER_00]: But we also think our relationships with our kids, whether they're with us older, younger, how's our relationship with our children?

12:56 [SPEAKER_00]: Also, we have to think of a relationship with our siblings, our brothers and sisters, do we get along? [SPEAKER_00]: Don't we get along? [SPEAKER_00]: How are our parents? [SPEAKER_00]: We have to keep a lot of get along with them as well. [SPEAKER_00]: How is our relationship as a strain relationship? [SPEAKER_00]: Is it something we really need to work on? [SPEAKER_00]: Is it something that's just too far to be helped? [SPEAKER_00]: We really need to work on those relationships, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Those are our family relationships. [SPEAKER_00]: We also consider our work relationships. [SPEAKER_00]: Do you love your boss? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you love the people that work for you? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you disagree with your teammates all the time? [SPEAKER_00]: Is there a lot of frustration there? [SPEAKER_00]: We need to identify if there's any challenges there. [SPEAKER_00]: And then of course we are friends to people who run the streets with, people we hang out with, our neighbors, are those people that we have good relationships with or bad relationships with. [SPEAKER_00]: If those are not good relationships or any of those are strange, it could be a cause of the challenge in our overall life, right?

13:41 [SPEAKER_00]: After our goes, we come to, oh, [SPEAKER_00]: occupation. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, the people we work with, do we get along with them? [SPEAKER_00]: Our relationships good. [SPEAKER_00]: Do we have a job or do we have a career? [SPEAKER_00]: Are we working for hourly wages? [SPEAKER_00]: Or do we have a salary? [SPEAKER_00]: Are we making the money we should be making? [SPEAKER_00]: Are we not making the money we should be making? [SPEAKER_00]: Are we still climbing the corporate ladder looking to elevate our business to get ourselves further further in our company? [SPEAKER_00]: or how we give it up on that and we're looking for a way out. [SPEAKER_00]: When you think about your occupation and stress and strain them out of hours, you spend your occupation, we've got to make sure things are dialed in there to make sure our overall pattern in our life is going the way we want it to, right? [SPEAKER_00]: That brings us to you, which is for upkeep, upkeep talks about our physical health, as well as our mental health.

14:25 [SPEAKER_00]: We think about our physical health. [SPEAKER_00]: Do we know our numbers? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what your blood pressure is? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what your weight is? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what your PSA is if you're a man? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what your A1C is, or your sugar is, either way, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you getting annual physicals for women? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you getting your annual annuals? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you taking care of yourself physically? [SPEAKER_00]: Also, are you lifting weights? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you working on your flexibility? [SPEAKER_00]: Working on your balance? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you eating right? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you not eating right? [SPEAKER_00]: All those things tie into your physical health? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you upkeep, right? [SPEAKER_00]: The other side of that coin is your mental health. [SPEAKER_00]: Are you getting enough sleep? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you always superstressed out? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you have anxiety attacks?

15:06 [SPEAKER_00]: All those breathe, are you having challenges breathing? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you taking the time to take a belly breath every once in a while? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you breathing with your belly, then out through your nose? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you taking time to do those things to make sure that your mental health stays in line? [SPEAKER_00]: And also, again, it guides into your relationships. [SPEAKER_00]: How is your overall mental health? [SPEAKER_00]: That's very important, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So that's upkeep. [SPEAKER_00]: That takes me to training. [SPEAKER_00]: Training is what are you putting into your mind on a daily and weekly basis? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you taking the time to read positive uplifting books? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you listening to positive podcasts like this one that are educating you? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you taking any kind of course work, maybe taking an online course, maybe taking some courses on a community college? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you doing things to help yourself that way?

15:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Or are you sitting on a tour of the desk rolling, looking at women fighting in parking lots? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you playing video games to way too late in the morning? [SPEAKER_00]: Way out in two or three o'clock in the morning and not getting up rest, so you're not to your dead tire going to work the next day? [SPEAKER_00]: Which one is it? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you doing things that are helping you get better or are you doing things that are actually tearing you down? [SPEAKER_00]: Right eating really bad diet, you know, all those types of things that you could be doing differently, but you're not right. [SPEAKER_00]: That takes us to e which is enterprise enterprises when you think about your paycheck. [SPEAKER_00]: What are you doing in addition to your paycheck? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you doing anything to make additional dollars? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a side hustle? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a side business?

16:27 [SPEAKER_00]: Are you considering or putting together a side hustle as you work your regular job and an effort to get out of your job? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you doing things in your community? [SPEAKER_00]: Do you volunteer your time to help your community get better? [SPEAKER_00]: What are you doing that's enterprise and that's gonna help your family continue on further and further into the future? [SPEAKER_00]: And that brings us finally to us. [SPEAKER_00]: S is our spirit, spirituality. [SPEAKER_00]: For many people that is their religion belief, their religious belief. [SPEAKER_00]: And the question is, are you reading your Quran? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you reading your Bible? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you reading your Testament? [SPEAKER_00]: Your book of Mormon? [SPEAKER_00]: Are you reading some kind of a book that's helping you? [SPEAKER_00]: stay spiritually connected to where you want to be connected or you also you may want to consider the East Asian religions and faith as well and there's other people that believe in the universe and earth and mother earth and those types of things whatever it is that connects you to whatever you want to be connected to.

17:17 [SPEAKER_00]: how are you doing in that area or are you just all by yourself all the time lonely and lonesome what do we need to do to get that fixed so that's rounds r o u t e s those are the different areas and what we need to do with that is we need to get to studying we need to find that where you are so that we can move you forward to success all right so now I'm going to talk about the running routes method [SPEAKER_00]: The methodology I put together are systemed visuals from coming here in their life, to rising up here in their life. [SPEAKER_00]: For a lot of us, it's getting back to where we used to be, for some of us, it may be the first time being up there. [SPEAKER_00]: But the goal is to get you back where you want to be, live in the life you want to live. [SPEAKER_00]: So before I get into the actual system, I want to talk about Paul Brown.

17:58 [SPEAKER_00]: Paul Brown is the greatest football coach of all time. [SPEAKER_00]: He's the greatest innovator in all the football ever. [SPEAKER_00]: He started out in national hiles as a high school coach. [SPEAKER_00]: became the head coach at the Ohio State University. [SPEAKER_00]: I won a national championship with the Ohio State. [SPEAKER_00]: After winning the Ohio State, he became the owner's last head coach of the Cleveland Browns. [SPEAKER_00]: The Cleveland Browns are actually named after Paul Brown. [SPEAKER_00]: He was that big a figure in the world of football. [SPEAKER_00]: So the reason I bring up Paul Brown is because he was the innovator that figured out [SPEAKER_00]: that athletes all learn different ways. [SPEAKER_00]: Must-a-way, all, all of you learn differently. [SPEAKER_00]: Athletes don't all learn the same way, right? [SPEAKER_00]: There's essentially five different ways that an athlete learns.

18:40 [SPEAKER_00]: There are some athletes like you think of a paid manning. [SPEAKER_00]: He got drafted first. [SPEAKER_00]: The cult sent him the playbook in the mail. [SPEAKER_00]: Or overnight or whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: He bought a time he showed up for camp two weeks later. [SPEAKER_00]: He knew the entire playbook. [SPEAKER_00]: because that's what he is. [SPEAKER_00]: He's a studious guy that likes to read, research, and do all those different things. [SPEAKER_00]: Taking all the information into his brain was something that was very simple for him. [SPEAKER_00]: And it is like that, probably, from most quarterbacks, but that's just a famous story about the fact that Peyton Manning acts he's over that book. [SPEAKER_00]: So number one is some people just want to read the information, take the information in for that from reading the information they move for it. [SPEAKER_00]: The second kind of person is an athlete that needs a coach to draw up on the board. [SPEAKER_00]: This is what I was. [SPEAKER_00]: I was a guy that I could read the playbook all I wanted to, but if coach stood in front of me and said, hey, we're going to run Hank.

19:25 [SPEAKER_00]: This is Hank. [SPEAKER_00]: This guy runs a pivot. [SPEAKER_00]: This guy runs out here. [SPEAKER_00]: This guy's over the ball. [SPEAKER_00]: We're forming this triangle to put this line back around an island. [SPEAKER_00]: whichever way he goes, we throw the opposite way. [SPEAKER_00]: To explain to me that way why I looked at it on the board was perfection. [SPEAKER_00]: I could take it for me, I took a middle picture of that and that was what I knew and that was how I learned all fences so quickly actually was because I had that piece locked in. [SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of people that's the same thing. [SPEAKER_00]: If someone just stands there and explains to them, they've got it in a lock, they're ready to go. [SPEAKER_00]: The third way is to watch film and football, you're filming yourself, you're filming the other team, and they'll have footage of the play being run the last season, the last week, the other team running it, and you watch your position and what your guy does on the film.

20:13 [SPEAKER_00]: And by watching that film, some people's brains, not mine, are able to see, oh, [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's what it looks like. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that's how I run that route. [SPEAKER_00]: That's how I get open that's how I that's the whole how the whole opens up in the running back. [SPEAKER_00]: I can run through it. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's the third way right. [SPEAKER_00]: So the fourth way is walk through a lot of athletes need the spatial aspect of it around them. [SPEAKER_00]: So we go out on the field they line us up. [SPEAKER_00]: and the coach says, height calls a play and they say, hike and this guy steps here, that guy steps there. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like choreography, but for a lot of guys, that's really what they need to really figure it out spatially, especially on as an offensive line. [SPEAKER_00]: And they've got to see, okay, that guy's gonna step there.

20:56 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna step here. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got that guy, I've got the other guy and for a lot of guys, that's really how they learn the game of football, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And then after that, there's number five, which is practice. [SPEAKER_00]: We got on the field. [SPEAKER_00]: We practice the thing we learned, whichever way we learned it, early and often. [SPEAKER_00]: You run the same play over and over, against different coverages, against different fronts, and different downs and distances. [SPEAKER_00]: and that's how you learn how to play football. [SPEAKER_00]: So my principles behind what I'm doing is the same thing. [SPEAKER_00]: To have a cookie cutter format for everyone to read through some kind of boilerplate type of thing and fill in blanks, doesn't make sense for everybody. [SPEAKER_00]: There's some people that are going to want to have a video of me telling them exactly what it is.

21:36 [SPEAKER_00]: Some people want the boilerplate thing that explains them what it is. [SPEAKER_00]: And another people need to have a conversation with me or someone else to make sure we're walking them through what their next step needs to be. [SPEAKER_00]: And then ultimately, we all go out with practice. [SPEAKER_00]: We actually don't practice, we just play the game. [SPEAKER_00]: And after we play the game, all right, this guy don't lie. [SPEAKER_00]: We come back, we watch the film, what we done. [SPEAKER_00]: And we decide if what we made, decisions we made in our lives were good, bad, or ugly. [SPEAKER_00]: And then we make... [SPEAKER_00]: adjustments and then we move forward. [SPEAKER_00]: That's the principle. [SPEAKER_00]: Everything I do is basically based on football. [SPEAKER_00]: What I learned is the football player, which was greatest sport ever, is are the things that I'm sharing with you in my different ways. [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so as we get into the steps of the system, I want to talk you through the steps of the system and then from there we'll go from there.

22:22 [SPEAKER_00]: So number one, the number one thing we do is we [SPEAKER_00]: have what we call the routes index. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a first step. [SPEAKER_00]: We have both a 60 question routes index. [SPEAKER_00]: We have a 18 question at routes index. [SPEAKER_00]: And what it does is ask you questions on the different areas of the routes. [SPEAKER_00]: And you scale yourself based on how you feel about those different things. [SPEAKER_00]: So understand, this is not like a grade. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, I got a 50, I failed. [SPEAKER_00]: This has nothing to do with the school system. [SPEAKER_00]: Nothing to do with 100%, none of those things. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just giving you a number [SPEAKER_00]: There's no trying to get a perfect score. [SPEAKER_00]: There is no, I've got to get the best score. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got to get really high and really high in this level. [SPEAKER_00]: That level is just an honest interpretation of what's going on with you in your current route situation.

23:08 [SPEAKER_00]: That's always trying to get a baseline for where you are so that we can start moving you in the directions in the areas you need help in. [SPEAKER_00]: That's really all it is. [SPEAKER_00]: After this and the bottom down below in this below the episode this week, we're going to offer the 60 questions [SPEAKER_00]: routes index for free. [SPEAKER_00]: The 18 question index is always free, but today [SPEAKER_00]: For listening to this podcast, you're gonna get the 60 question index to do for free. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, so that's gonna be something soft to today. [SPEAKER_00]: Take advantage of that, identify where you are, find out where you might have a situation and then from there we can see how we're gonna go about fixing it. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, so that is the routes index.

23:50 [SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, it's gonna be free. [SPEAKER_00]: So the next thing we're gonna touch on after we can done with the index we're gonna talk about habits. [SPEAKER_00]: are your habits hurting you or your habits helping you. [SPEAKER_00]: We've got to find a way to make sure that your habits are helping you. [SPEAKER_00]: For me, in my life, the last 15, 20 years, when I go into what I call a rut where my life isn't right, this is all up, that's off. [SPEAKER_00]: Doing the wrong kind of work, not getting enough sleep, those types of things. [SPEAKER_00]: I do what I call hitting the switch. [SPEAKER_00]: Like this old Sean Merimer, the chargers guy. [SPEAKER_00]: Hit the switch. [SPEAKER_00]: When I hit the switch, I've got to change what I'm doing to get where I want to be. [SPEAKER_00]: And I simply hit the switch. [SPEAKER_00]: And for years, having a Swiss for me meant I'm going to get up in the morning. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm reading my Bible. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm getting up in the morning. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go jogging.

24:30 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to get up in the morning. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go run sprint. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to get up in the morning. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go to the gym. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to lift weights. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to start going on date nights with my wife. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to start going to church on Sundays. [SPEAKER_00]: Bible study on Wednesday. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to start. [SPEAKER_00]: Making sure that I'm a cooking, healthy meals at home and not eating fast food. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to stop drinking soda, I'm stopped drinking beer, I'm going to stop drinking wine, I'm going to start eating healthy, everything's going to be all protein, everything's going to be all carbs, everything, it was maniacal the thing I would go through in an effort to make myself better. [SPEAKER_00]: And I would last what two, three, maybe four weeks doing some of those things and then it would all fall apart. [SPEAKER_00]: Because if you think about waking up early and you've ever were waking up awaken lately and then you're also looking at the fact that [SPEAKER_00]: you're lifting weights, so you're sore and you're tired and all those different things, it's just not a good mix.

25:12 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so what I've created is called when the week and what when the week is is it gives you an opportunity to take all the habits that are not currently benefiting you and you can find a way to replace them with habits that do begin to benefit you. [SPEAKER_00]: So in an example, [SPEAKER_00]: If I'm in her individual to drink the two liters of diet Pepsi a day, and I want to stop that habit, what I would do is maybe I would swap it with, make sure that I drink water on a daily basis instead. [SPEAKER_00]: So you have the habits that have not been affitting you and you find ways to swap those with something else so you do want to benefit you. [SPEAKER_00]: In addition, that you have new habits, you also want to add to your life. [SPEAKER_00]: So when I listen to doing the swap with the water, I also want to start to do [SPEAKER_00]: Tai Chi every night before I go to bed, and that's maybe something that's going to help me with my spirit situation.

25:57 [SPEAKER_00]: Might help me with my relationship situation, help me with my sleep. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's another thing I add on. [SPEAKER_00]: So when the week is interactive, as I said, comes with a large wall poster, allows you to put your goals in front of you so that you see them. [SPEAKER_00]: And maybe you can have people that are that you love, help join in, make the change in your life. [SPEAKER_00]: Also comes with books. [SPEAKER_00]: It's always this all printable. [SPEAKER_00]: You put it off the sheets week over week. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a 30 day, 60 day, 90 day plan to get you where you wanna be with your new habits. [SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: The next tool that I created is the running routes school community that's SKOL. [SPEAKER_00]: It's an interactive community. [SPEAKER_00]: We're on a daily basis we get together. [SPEAKER_00]: We talk about different things that are going on. [SPEAKER_00]: Every day there'll be a daily prompt based on one of the areas of routes.

26:40 [SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about relationships one day. [SPEAKER_00]: Occupational things the next day. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about everything about your health, sometimes your mental health, sometimes your physical health, and we'll go through the weeks, making sure we have conversations around these different things. [SPEAKER_00]: In addition to that, we also have a Friday lies where we get together, see how the week went, have a little quick conversation about how everybody's doing. [SPEAKER_00]: If we've had any questions or any challenges they're faced with, we can help talk you through that. [SPEAKER_00]: We as a group can talk you through that. [SPEAKER_00]: The other thing we talk about is a routes reading room. [SPEAKER_00]: I love books, I love reading books, limited. [SPEAKER_00]: I got all these different books back here. [SPEAKER_00]: Who not how? [SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about reading different books to find different ways to help you in your life. [SPEAKER_00]: So the reading room is a great opportunity. [SPEAKER_00]: Additionally, I've all just a training that will be in there.

27:22 [SPEAKER_00]: Learning more about routes, learning more about the psychology, all the different areas of routes, and then there'll be additional challenges where we might get together and have some kind of a challenge. [SPEAKER_00]: We're making sure we're all working on one thing for the week or one thing for the month to make sure we're improving in those different areas. [SPEAKER_00]: Additionally, we'll have some workshops, we'll have some webinars, we'll bring in an expert in one of the different areas, they'll have a workshop, a webinar, my head just have a best of guests are where someone shows up and they talk about their situation, maybe it's someone I interviewed on the podcast that you guys would like to spend more time with. [SPEAKER_00]: will have them out. [SPEAKER_00]: Have you come out? [SPEAKER_00]: You can ask questions of them. [SPEAKER_00]: It's questions of myself. [SPEAKER_00]: We can kind of interview them again with your questions versus my questions, right?

28:03 [SPEAKER_00]: And then the last thing I talk about that there's a lot of other stuff on there that'll be growing. [SPEAKER_00]: But one thing that'll be on there is routes intensive. [SPEAKER_00]: The route's intensive is if you're really, really struggling and let's say training and you're just not [SPEAKER_00]: You're not, you don't have any, you can't figure out what on earth you'd want what you'd want to train on. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, having an intensive and we'll start as a group, we'll individually get together as a group and figure out digging deep in what types of things we need to start training on so that we can find out down the road what is we want to get better out. [SPEAKER_00]: So, as I said, the routes, school community is going to be great resource for you as far as different things to find to help you dig deeper in what your situation is. [SPEAKER_00]: And last thing I offer is one-on-one coaching. [SPEAKER_00]: You can even one-on-one coaching for me, six, 12, 18 weeks, just to take you through the system.

28:48 [SPEAKER_00]: Like I talked about, some people can have explain on the board, some people just read it. [SPEAKER_00]: If you're a person that needs someone to actually walk you through it, also have coaching with myself that you can go through. [SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty intense, it's pretty straightforward. [SPEAKER_00]: I do tell it like it is. [SPEAKER_00]: So you can't be sensitive up in there. [SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna talk for real, as I say, for real, for real. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, so that's what we're looking to do. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's a question I have for you. [SPEAKER_00]: Have you ever gone to a high school football game and you watch this offense on the field and the quarterback can barely throw the ball 20, 25 yards, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And you're looking at them, they're running a spread offense. [SPEAKER_00]: Two receivers on each side, offensive line, single running back and a quarterback.

29:30 [SPEAKER_00]: This kid can't throw the ball save his life. [SPEAKER_00]: But you look at this offensive line, and this is high school football, and they're all over 200 pounds. [SPEAKER_00]: The running back is like almost 200 pounds himself, and you're thinking to yourself, why do they ever throw the ball at all? [SPEAKER_00]: Why don't they just hand it to this kid? [SPEAKER_00]: Because this kid is him. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, the kid him, he him. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're not gonna hand the ball this kid, they're throwing the ball over the place. [SPEAKER_00]: And you think yourself, is this coach an idiot or what? [SPEAKER_00]: The answer is just the coach is an idiot because what the coach has done is the coach has said, this is the system that I run. [SPEAKER_00]: I run this system. [SPEAKER_00]: you as an athlete have to fit into this system or we won't have success. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that's what a lot of coaches and a lot of people that are out there giving people guidance and advice of doing their thing.

30:15 [SPEAKER_00]: Here's my system, fit yourself into my system. [SPEAKER_00]: And when you get into my system, then you're gonna have all the success you want. [SPEAKER_00]: Because everybody is the same, right? [SPEAKER_00]: We're all carbon copies of one another, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And that's just not the answer. [SPEAKER_00]: What we're looking to do here with the route system is, we're looking to identify where you are with the routes index. [SPEAKER_00]: Then from there, we're going to figure out where you want to sprinkle in. [SPEAKER_00]: What first off, what areas are you struggling in? [SPEAKER_00]: Let's identify that. [SPEAKER_00]: And then once we identify that, we can start to set some new habits. [SPEAKER_00]: And now to we set some new habits, we can start to set some goals. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, so we can start with goals, where goals are way down here, because we have to figure out where you are first, before we decide what offense to run, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And some of you, you should be running spread offense.

30:56 [SPEAKER_00]: You can't throw the ball around, but some of you need to get some big hog mullets, get a narrow run to ball, because that's just the way your life is set up. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not here to sell everybody the same offense. [SPEAKER_00]: Whatever offense you need to win the game is the offense we're going to go with. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's the great thing about the route system is there's so many different aspects to it, different angles, and it melds to you to make sure you get the success you want. [SPEAKER_00]: So we're not really doing the boiler plate, here it goes, there'll be some boiler plate stuff in that don't get me wrong because we got to start somewhere, but at the same time, if you need individualized attention to get out of the rut you're in, to go back to being who you were, or for some of you to get to where you want to be for the first time, the routes index and the routes system, the routes method is really what we're looking for to take advantage of, right?

31:43 [SPEAKER_00]: So that's the routes method. [SPEAKER_00]: Glad to have gone through with you. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll really look forward to you guys taking advantage. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's go through the steps real quick. [SPEAKER_00]: Step one, take the routes index down below, take the 18 question of the 60 question. [SPEAKER_00]: Here today is being offered for free. [SPEAKER_00]: The 60 question is going to get you deeper in your situation that you're better understanding where you stand in the ROU TES, right? [SPEAKER_00]: After that, take advantage of when the week. [SPEAKER_00]: If you want to start building a structure, you've got to start building better habits. [SPEAKER_00]: If you read any of the habit books, atomic habits, Charles Duhig's habit book, you know habits are the backbone of what we do. [SPEAKER_00]: looking to get you starting some strong habits, starting some strong patterns, right?

32:23 [SPEAKER_00]: As we can start to run better patterns. [SPEAKER_00]: Next thing is looking to the school community. [SPEAKER_00]: School community is going to be a lot of resources there, starting out. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to make sure that you have the access to the indexes. [SPEAKER_00]: There will be some classes, some courses you can take in there, to start yourself in the process of identifying. [SPEAKER_00]: If you identify where a situation is, there's something in there that can start to help you hammer homes and things with your. [SPEAKER_00]: with your situation with whether it's ROUTE or S, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So really briefly, I want to also go over my concept of what Paul Brown did for like I said, for many of you, you're going to be able to just plug into the community and just boom, it's just there for you, right? [SPEAKER_00]: You're like the person that can read the playbook and figure the playbook out on your own. [SPEAKER_00]: Others of you will need to go through a course where I'm actually talking you through the peace and parts, just like Coach did for me up on the board.

33:10 [SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be that type of thing for you. [SPEAKER_00]: For some of you, you know, you need to watch some film. [SPEAKER_00]: Take some film, have some on conversation with you about some film, but what you've done in the past, and maybe break down maybe some of the holes in your game, identify the steps you take going forward so that you can win. [SPEAKER_00]: And the further you it's just a walkthrough. [SPEAKER_00]: let's get together, let's walk through the steps that you need to take, you know, the index, the uh, when the week, taking those steps as you walk through to get to where you want to be, and then like anybody else starting tomorrow, we're going to go out and practice, you know, just a really quick tip, write down what you want to do tomorrow, today, and it'll make you have a better day tomorrow, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So [SPEAKER_00]: From me to you, I'm glad you joined us today. [SPEAKER_00]: Look forward to seeing you next episode.

33:51 [SPEAKER_00]: And I'll just remember, your legacy is not what you did. [SPEAKER_00]: It's who you helped along the way. [SPEAKER_00]: Have a great day. [SPEAKER_00]: Look forward to seeing you next time. [SPEAKER_00]: Bye.
